Okay, now I know I am a tad late, but y’all… I recently watched the film Twisters, and I have some thoughts. I will say, it was an overall enjoyable movie, BUT there were some elements that left me wanting more. Mostly as it pertains to the character’s relationship development. For me, it had its highs and lows, so let me dive right on into my Twisters Movie Review.
The film truly excelled in its action sequences. There’s something exhilarating about watching natural disasters portrayed in cinema to me, and Twisters didn’t hold back. The storm-chasing scenes were intense and well-executed, pulling me right into the storm. This is where the film shines, bringing a high level of suspense that kept me invested. These were also the moments that I wished I had waited to see the film in 4DX instead.
*If you don’t know what 4DX is, it’s a type of film presentation. It allows the audience to interact with movies through various special effects; like motion-seats, wind, strobe lights, simulated snow, scents, etc. In other words, it’s a step up from 3D.*
Although I found the action scenes exciting, one of the film’s biggest letdowns for me was the underdeveloped love triangle. Anthony Ramos’ character, Javi, clearly had feelings for the main character, Kate, but this plot point was barely explored. Instead of any real effort or tension between them, it felt like the movie portrayed him as the “annoying friend” who happened to tag along. This was particularly disappointing because the main character entered the story alongside him, which should have given them more depth and history to build on.
There were moments when the relationship dynamics hinted at complexity, but it always stopped short of delivering anything meaningful. If they were aiming for a love triangle, they missed the mark. I wish the filmmakers had fleshed out the nuances between the characters, exploring why Javi didn’t fully pursue his feelings. That emotional depth would have added another layer to the story, making the stakes feel higher and more personal.
Additionally, I really wish we could have seen a scene between Javi and Tyler, the other key character with a connection to Kate. They both clearly loved her, but they never had a moment to talk about why she meant so much to them. A scene like this could have brought the tension between them to a head, creating a more impactful and authentic relationship dynamic. It felt like a missed opportunity to let those emotions bubble over without a 1-on-1 scene between the two men.
Another area that needed more attention was Kate’s relationship with her mother. The film started with a phone call between them, where they seemed to have a loving and supportive relationship before the original twister hit. This setup led me to expect some deeper emotional beats later on, especially when the main character showed up unexpectedly at her mother’s house.
However, the movie glossed over what could have been a touching exploration of their bond. Instead of showing how their relationship might have been affected by the events of the past, the reunion felt too smooth. I wanted to see some raw emotion from both sides—how they had drifted, what had changed, and how they could reconcile. This would have added much-needed depth to the story and given viewers a more personal connection to the characters.
Despite these shortcomings, Twisters was an exciting ride. Its chaotic visuals and action sequences are worth the watch, even if some storylines and character relationships were underdeveloped. With a more nuanced approach to both the romantic subplot and the family dynamic, it could have easily hit a higher mark for me. But for fans of the disaster movie genre, Twisters still offers enough storm-chasing excitement to make it a fun watch. I’d rate it a solid 7/10, mostly for the thrilling moments that kept me on the edge of my seat. Have you seen the movie?
